Get That Winter Glow!

The best foundation you can wear is glowing, healthy skin.

As winter sets in, it’s easy to feel a bit dull and lackluster, but we believe you deserve to sparkle year-round! Discover ways you can easily boost circulation, hydrate your skin, and other tips to find (and keep!) that holiday shine.

Explore our tips for maintaining that winter glow, even when the temperatures drop.

Hydrate – You likely already know that you should be drinking water after receiving a massage, but staying hydrating can have a positive effect on the appearance and feel of your skin, as well. By improving elasticity of the epidermis while simultaneously improving skin density and thickness, drinking water can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Water also helps the body and the appearance of skin by improving circulation, reducing puffiness, aiding in the flushing out of waste, and balancing out oil and water production. People who drink large amounts of water are less likely to suffer from scars, wrinkles, and soft lines and they won’t show as many signs of aging as those who drink little amounts of water.

Eat Plant Based Whole Foods – Registered dietician nutritionist Huma Chaudhry explains that “Compared to a diet rich in ultra-processed food, plant-based food is rich in vitamins like C and E, as well as lysine, beta-carotene, and antioxidants that can help with the production of collagen leading to a more youthful-looking skin.” A plant-based diet is naturally low in sodium and saturated fats while being high in antioxidants. And many fruits and vegetables are hydrating, while nuts, seeds and avocados contain healthy unsaturated fats such as Omega 3s that help with skin health.

It’s not usually necessary to cut out all other foods and products. Experts tend to suggest having a few meatless days a week, reducing the consumption of red meat, while enlarging portions of vegetables and whole grains. Avoid fatty, sugary, high in sodium “convenience” products and “fast foods” whenever possible, opting for whole fruits and vegetables instead.

Moisturize – It’s obvious that moisturizer aids in hydrating skin, but the gentle creamy product also aids in repairing skin and creating a protective barrier against infections, chemicals and other damage. Moisturizers can help reduce the signs of aging by keeping skin plump and fresh, and preventing fine lines and wrinkles. And some moisturizers can help even out different skin tones by adding a slight tint or by making the skin have a slight sheen or shimmer.

Use Sunscreen – Yes! It is vital to wear sunscreen, even in Winter! The risk of skin cancer is increased in the winter because the ozone layer is thinner, and UV rays are still strong. Winter weather can cause dry, sensitive, and inflamed skin. Sunscreen helps maintain skin hydration and protects against the drying effects of cold winds and low temperatures. And further, snow and ice reflect up to 80% of UV rays, nearly doubling your exposure. Cloudy conditions can also amplify UV radiation.

Some moisturizers also contain an SPF of 15 or higher, or have sunscreen added in. Sunscreen helps your skin by protecting it from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can cause skin cancer, sunburns, wrinkles, spots, and other damage, along with premature aging.

To get a natural glow without damaging your skin, use an SPF 15 or higher, and go with sunless tanners or tinted beauty products like moisturizer or bronzer that also have a slight shimmer.

Go to the Dermatologist – A dermatologist can help achieve glowing skin by recommending a personalized skincare routine that includes regular exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, proper hydration, using brightening ingredients like Vitamin C, applying sunscreen diligently. They may also perform in-office treatments like chemical peels or micro needling depending on your skin type and concerns, all aimed at promoting cell turnover and revealing a radiant complexion.

Dry Brush – Dry brushing is the act of gently brushing the skin to promote circulation, lymphatic flow, and gently exfoliate the skin. With regular dry brushing, you may notice softer skin that looks more radiant and revitalized, even as the weather grows colder. Dry Brushing is a quick, low cost, low risk and easy way to give your skin a little glow.

Take Your Vitamins – Certain nutrients can delay the effects of aging and protect your skin from sun damage, acne and dryness.
For Example: Vitamin B12 helps with skin regeneration, which can make skin look more radiant and reduce dark spots. And Vitamin E an antioxidant that helps protect skin from sun damage and keeps skin soft and hydrated.
Vitamins A, C, D, and E especially can play a role in skin health. You can get most of these from food–or with vitamin D, from the sun. However if you do not eat enough foods with these nutrients, then supplements may be helpful to boost your intake of skin health nutrients.

Get a Facial or Massage – Similarly to seeing a dermatologist, a knowledgeable esthetician is able to provide services and products that aid in creating healthier skin, such as removing dead skin cells, evening skin tone, aiding in skin elasticity, and reducing puffiness. Both massage therapists and estheticians are able to provide facial massages – possibly including facial rollers or gua sha tools –  which can aid in boosting circulation and reducing inflammation for a brighter appearance.
